September 23. Remembrance at Arnhem. Roll of Honour

Today marks the last day of the battle for Arnhem. At the 2019 75th Anniversary, some of the ‘original’ flower children who laid flowers on allied graves joined today’s youngsters. Two entries in today’s Roll are members of the Glider Pilot Regiment – James Boyd of Portstewart and John Smellie of Holywood who rest at Arnhem. In WW1 Wilhelmina Charley from Dunmurry, a VAD, in the UVF hospital in Belfast, served later in Salonica, and died in service in Genoa, Italy. This day in 1941 Arthur Leonard Spence a staff member of the Northern Bank and later to be Squadron Leader, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Army Chaplain Jospeh Quinn whose father was Rector of St Jude’s, Belfast was killed in 1943 at Salerno. Educated at Shrewsbury and Oxford University he had been awarded the Military Cross for his service in France, Syria and Italy as Chaplain to 5th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment. His citation is included in his entry in the Roll of Honour.
