
Today is the birthday of Victoria Cross recipient, Rifleman William McFadzean, of the 36th (Ulster) Division. Vincent Acheson had captained Dungannon Rugby Club and after his father’s death in 1912 took charge of the linen manufacturing firm trading as Acheson & Smith. He volunteered on the outbreak of war and was captain of a company of Inniskilling Fusiliers when he died during the Salonika Campaign on this day in 1916. He is remembered on Dungannon WM, and Castlecaulfield Presbyterian Church RH. On the same day Ballycastle born George McCormick died serving with Canadian Infantry. He is remembered on the Vimy Memorial, France and Ballycastle Presbyterian Church RH. Tom Smyth from Randalstown enlisted in US forces in Washington. He died in 1918 serving in the Meuse Argonne. Spencer Jones from Bangor fell with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers at Cassino in 1944. The War Memorial Paviliion at Knock Rugby Club was opened today in 1920.
