
On this day in 1918 The Rev Theodore Hardy VC, DSO, MC died of his wounds received whilst visiting his men who were being heavily shelled on the front line. Three NI infanteers are in today’s Roll for 1916 – Dennis Dillon, Thomas Pollard from Randalstown and James Watson from Lurgan are named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, at Hainaut, Belgium. Highlighted today is the loss in WW2 of three men from NI in HMS Broadwater, a former US destroyer. Alex Buchanan from Artigarvan, Samuel Morrison from Killyleagh and James Cree from Lisburn were lost. James Cree had two sinkings and an injury at Dunkirk before his 20th birthday. Today’s veteran representative is Baron Cooke of Islandreagh, Muckamore, who served in RN and was President of the Belfast Branch of the Burma Star Association.
