October 29. Polar expert improved Arctic convoy kit. Roll of Honour

Surgeon Captain Edward W Bingham from Dungannon was one of the most experienced polar explorers before WW2. His expertise developed clothing for those on Arctic convoys. The fallen on this day in WW1 include five from the Royal Irish Rifles. Matthew Gibson was one of them. He returned from Mexico to serve. He was awarded an MC and Bar. John McClure born near Randalstown was educated in South Africa. He had engineering qualifications and was involved in the mining of Messines Ridge in June 1917. He died of influenza after being wounded. Alex Muirhead, a Derry born Scots Guardsman, died in one of the fierce confrontations at Gheluvelt, in Belgium. This is the anniversary of the deaths of four RAF personnel in WW2. A Veteran remembered today is Archie Morrow who served in the army from 1931 until 1946 in both the Royal Irish Fusiliers and Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
