
Alan Bradshaw, Paymaster Captain. CBE. RN. Served 1916 – 38.
He was recalled to serve 1939 – 45 when he played a key role in the success of Bletchley Hall where the German naval Enigma Code was deciphered. In today’s Roll, William Beggs, a Royal Marine from Belfast who fought in Gallipoli and the defence of Antwerp in WW1 died at Beaumont Hamel in 1916. In 1917 John Cooke who emigrated from Newbuildings fell serving with the City of Winnipeg battalion on the Passchendaele Ridge. John Shaw from Larne formerley of the North Irish Horse also fell serving with Canadian forces. Two Royal Irish Riflemen are recorded in today’s Roll. 19 year old Basil Pollock, who left Campbell College in 1939, died piloting his plane over Norway in 1940. David Tees a naval reserve officer from HMS Caroline died in a plane crash on way to new post in Malta. Four who died on this date in Italy in 1943 include William James Warren of Ballymena, and John White from Belfast serving with the London Irish Rifles, 2nd Btn. in Italy. Veteran James Knox of the Belfast 8th HAA regiment was wounded in 1940 and evacuated to Scotland via Le Havre. He died this day in 1985.
