November 5. Lord Annesley RN fought in air and on land. Roll of Honour

Included in today’s Roll from WW1 are Lord Annesley of Castlewellan a naval aviator, who before he was 21 years of age sailed from Liverpool to Vancouver, around Cape Horn. He died this month in 1914. He went missing on a flight from Eastchurch to France in 1914. James Gaston a medical officer from Cloughmills was awarded the MC. A later account said “He attended the wounded of five other units besides his own throughout the day. The next day he led a party out in front and recovered twelve more wounded who were lying out”. and Staff Nurse Elizabeth Watson from Dromore died in service in France in 1918. In WW2 Richard Curry, a naval signalman from Coagh, was lost in HMS Jervis Bay in battle with German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer. He was 19 years old. Charles Milnes Gaskell a special forces SOE Liaison Officer with Russian N.K.V.D was lost in an aircraft returning from Russia in 1943. Today’s veterans are from Coleraine and Limavady.
