November 13. Sandes’ Home pioneer. Roll of Honour

These comrades have been stood down until next year. Six of the 15 WW 1 entries in the Roll today highlight the service of the Royal Naval Division. The naval anchor distinguishes their War Graves headstones. Three entries are of Royal Irish Riflemen. Old Campbellian William Hurst, son of the founder of Charles Hurst Automobiles, served in HMS Caroline. His WW2 grave in Egypt was visited by two fellow Caroline officers, Richard Pim, later Head Constable of the RUC, and John E Sayers, later editor of the Belfast Telegraph, who worked closely with Churchill maintaining his war office. In the Veterans Roll is Air Marshal Sir George Beamish of Coleraine who was capped 26 times for Ireland and was selected for the 1930 British and Irish Lions tour where he was responsible for getting the green of Ireland incorporated in the team’s colours. He had an outstanding record of high commands. Post service he returned home and in time cecame the High Sheriff of County Lndonderry. Also in the Veterans Roll is Baron Cooke of Islandreagh, a WW2 naval officer. He was the last President of the Belfast Branch of the Burma Start Association.
