November 14. Limavady War Memorial’s Australian officer. Roll of Honour

Photo – HMS Cavalier at Chatham on which there is a memorial unveiled by HRH Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh, to 11,000 men lost in RN Destroyers in WW2. William Stewart emigrated to Australia. His brother George emigrated to Canada. Both enlisted in the armies of their adopted countries and returned to Europe where both died in the service of democratic freedoms. They are named on Limavady’s War Memorial. In 1942 three men from NI were lost in the unmarked S.S. Scillin off the coast of Tunisia when it was intercepted by the Royal Navy’s H.M. Submarine Sahib. They were George Griffiths from Bangor, Patrick Grimley and George Lyttle from Portadown. Jean McCarron of the Auxiliary Territorial Service died in 1945 aged 24. Her remains rest in Tamlaght churchyard.
