On this day in 1917, 460 British tanks break through the German lines at Cambrai. It is history’s first successful large-scale armour attack. Dan McClelland from Bushmills and Manus McFadden from Portstewart died on that day. In WW2 two NI men were lost in HMS Khandahar. William Carson from Belfast had been a noted youth soccer international. George McDowell from Dollingstown was awarded the Albert Medal posthumous for bravery and devotion to duty saving life. One of today’s veterans is Basil Aldwell a naval flyer from Lurgan whose father was later the rector of St George’s Parish Church, Belfast. Basil survived being a Japanese POW. His entry has been extensively revised in Remembrance Ni’s preparation of a Roll of Honour for those who served in the Royal Navy in WW2. Don’t miss reading this one.
