November 29. TB claimed Ballycastle WW1 hero. Portadown Desert Rat. Roll of Honour

Ballycastle Rifleman Frank McClarty’s service in WW1 was recognised by the UK and Belgian authorities. He fell victim to TB which was rife in the trenches. Alexander Liggett was a Desert Rat from Portadown who survived being a POW in Italy and Germany in WW2. One of the eight RAF in today’s Roll is the son of the Most Revd. John Allen Fitzgerald Gregg, D.D., Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of all Ireland. John, an RAF Flying Officer, has no known grave. He died as a Japanese POW aboard Suez Maru which was sunk in Java by US Submarine Bonefish. Japanese Captain Kawano ordered the shooting of the prisoners in the water. From 1415 – 1630 hrs the Minesweeper W.12 massacres the survivors using machine gun and rifles. There were no survivors. John Francis Fitzgerald Gregg is remembered on the Singapore Memorial at Kranji War Cemetery, and in St Andrews Cathedral, Singapore.
