July 24 – The anniversary of the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres

Today is the anniversary of the unveiling of the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in 1927; the origin of the daily Act of Remembrance; some names from Northern Ireland which are engraved on it including that of the first MP to be killed in WW1.

June 26 – Poyntzpass midshipman was first recipient of the Victoria Cross

The first VC to be awarded was to Charles Davis Lucas from Poyntzpass then serving as a Midshipman in the Crimean War. He was promoted Acting Lieutenant immediately after the action.
