May 11. Derry sub hunter’s record. NI Horse wins Canadian honour at Cassino. Roll of Honour.

On this day in 1940 RNR Commander William Brown Piggot from Londonderry had his first major success as a U-boat hunter. He was awarded the DSC and bar. In 1941 Sergeant Air Gunner Robert Richardson, a former member of Carnmoney Parish Church Lads Brigade, died near Kiel. The Richardson Trophy for under-15’s schools hockey was given as a memorial to him. In 1944 the North Irish Horse took part in the massive fourth attack on Monte Cassino which began on this day, and were awarded a unique Canadian honour for their support. Gunner Bernard McKernan of 3rd Maritime Regiment perished when a U boat sunk SS Empire Heath off Rio de Janeiro.
