Autumn takes hold and the colours at CWGC cemeteries are now changing, as at the WW2 Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery in the Netherlands. In today’s Roll of Honour fifty – three men represent their comrades who fell on this date. Twenty two men of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers died in 1914 and are named on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium. Five of them were from Derry. Eight men from the Royal Irish Rifles fell this day in WW1 and are named here. The WW2 entries reflect the cost of liberating Italy. James Gilmour from Derry and James Mark from Limavady fell with the 9th (Derry) Royal Artillery regiment in 1943 near Naples. James Blair from Larne and William Murphy from Portadown of the Royal Ulster Rifles fell in 1944 near Santerno Valley.
