
Today is the anniversary of the founding regiment of the Royal Marines. Nine members of the Royal Irish Rifles who died in WW1 are recorded in today’s Roll. There were strong bonds established between NI and Canadian forces in the fight for Italian freedom. The North Irish Horse still wears a Maple Leaf badge as an Canadian honour of their service. The remains of four members of the Royal Ulster Rifles, 2nd Btn., The London Irish Rifles rest in the Moro River Canadian War Cemetery, Italy. They are Alfred Glass from Belfast, James Johnston from Glarryford, James Ryan from Belfast, and James King from Moira. The same day in 1943 Gunner James Colgan from Ballycastle died as a Japanese Prisoner of War Thailand.
