Today’s Roll includes three Royal Irish Riflemen. Hamilton Orr had served 12 years – 10 of them in India. He was given two days leave from England to visit Newtownards. He was killed within 10 days of reaching the front in November 1914. Two WW2 Fleet Air Arm pilots, one of whom had been a member of 502 (Ulster) Sqdn, RAF are recalled. The two veterans remembered today both have Canadian links. Benjamin Johnston, an Old Portoran, served in the Boer War and emigrated to Canada. He returned to serve with the N I Horse in WW1. Joseph Cunningham was a naval surgeon from Portrush who served on Atlantic and North Russian convoys in WW2. He migrated to Canada and was the first person from Canada to single-handedly sail the Atlantic in both directions. Photo – Ulster Gunners firing a Royal Salute at Hillsborough.
